Transformation / Turnaround Management Office (TMO)
World-class, large-scale change plans are obviously only valuable if they can be viably implemented. This often presents a challenge for managers as they struggle to balance the focus between running the program and handling day-to-day operations. As expected, this can limit the plan delivery and full value realization of any deal.
It is here where a Transformation/Turnaround Management Office (TMO) becomes essential: to act as the “orchestra director” across all areas to execute the plan. The TMO is the backbone of any large-scale effort—it sets the program rhythm and tackles the normal roadblocks that emerge from any rapid change experience.

Overview
- A Transformation Management Office (TMO) creates the structure, support, and visibility that are essential to drive sustained change.
- Led by Senior Transformation Officer (typically external); supported by internal company team.
- Main coordination body with program sponsors/leadership.
Main Responsibilities
- Identifies and organizes the TMO team
- Builds program tools to ensure adequate tracking and reporting of initiatives
- Drives program governance and operational cadence to ensure adherence to plan
- Embeds financial discipline to validate ROI of initiatives
- Guides, challenges, and provides thought leadership to teams
- Creates a robust change management culture to motivate the team and build the required capabilities to improve performance
